I have some great news. I just signed last night my first seven figure contract with distributors in Japan, so it is now guaranteed that I am going to hit the Million Dollar group of M3 racers. The contract that was signed last night was for $2.165 million over 2.5 years with a guaranteed $320k for 2009. My "Dream Job" is working for one of the top kitchen design firms in the area. I am learning kitchen design as a second career (marketing was my former career) and the owners are training me from the ground up, while I also take classes.

Presently I'm learning how the organization operates on a day-to-day basis, managing client projects, and am helping them with marketing issues. The Coach Connection (TCC), proudly announces that Gena Lindquist of Portsmouth, Va. was TCC’s 1,000th client to achieve her remarkable coachable goals through life coaching.

Gena is a 57-year-old young lady who found herself alone, and lost when her soul mate husband suddenly died in late 2005. Depression showed up. She found herself "struggling with where I was and what I wanted to do." She chose to "set a course for my new life towards the success picture in my head, without depression or feeling bitter." She called TCC for an appointment because "TCC focused only on me the client and not outside stuff." She further explains:

Through my participation in the coaching process from The Coach Connection sponsored by my Make Mine A $Million award I had 3 stellar coaching sessions. I find that as an independent business person having a weekly conversation with someone specific to my business and my goals is enormously helpful. Is it that I feel accountable or that I am more focused on my stated goals? I'm not sure. The net result is active growth in any area that we target. I feel like I have made significant progress in several areas.

We have discussed hiring, inventory management, "good debt" vs "bad debt" and development of my website thus far. In the area of hiring I've begun developing a job description for two types of individuals to assist me as my business grows. While I'm not ready to pull the trigger on a hire I know what I'm looking for so will be in a better position to proceed when I'm ready.

In thinking about hiring I've also come to the very, very clear position that I want to grow my business to the very largest it can be while utilizing contract specific employees. I know, nothing new there but my vision is clearer in this area than ever before. I firmly believe that the new economy not only supports but enables this type of endeavor.

I've made great strides in inventory management. Not only have I researched and become really clear about what I have and where I have it but I've cleaned house a bit lowering my overhead costs. The additional attention given to inventory also inadvertantly pushed me towards a sale I would not likely have considered if I had not recently reviewed all my holdings. I became more focused on selling what I had in reserve (more profitable) rather than looking outside and making a acquisition to satisfy a customer requirement. Better environmental move as well. Additionally it turned up some discrepancies that would have impacted future sales. All good. As a result I am clearer and more confident, that whole "knowledge is power" thing.

My coach and I have talked endlessly about finances. My relationship with money. "Good debt" vs "Bad Debt." All interesting. All frightening. The most compelling piece for me was the idea that we all have a target income (often unconscious) that we believe we are capable of making. An idea based on personal history, what our parents did, industry norms, etc. But in fact, those ideas are "capping" our ability. Our own financial glass ceiling. As a result I've raised my notion of what's feasible and am walking around with a new number firmly fixed: Make Mine A $Million or two :)

Another direct result of coaching I've begun to think a lot about the idea of passive income or income that is generated without your active participation. That thinking opened the door to an extension of my business that had previously been untapped: I acquired some furniture that I would deem "collectible." In doing so I made a long term investment in an area I had previously walked away from. In the past I would have ignored these items as being outside my business model. Now I view them as an extension of my business model. Pieces that after the proper planning and research will generate income on their own. I did some research (and will do more) and placed several items with a retail shop on consignment. We'll see... Now I'm actively looking at other ways to generate passive income.

It is hard for me to comprehend what life was like before coaching with Carroll, and the support of Bill Dueease. If there was any human being out there that needed career coaching, it was me. The Coach Connection saved me from a fate truly worse than death, never discovering who I was. And for that, I thank them both.

I contacted the Coaching Connection based on a hunch that came from reading an article about career coaching. I have all my life worked in jobs that I felt were the perfect description of "Corporate Slavery". My life was not my own, it was someone else's. I was just completely sick of getting another job because I was disgusted with the last one.

I was working in a federal government job that was rift with hostility, disrespect, and two coworkers that were retired but still showing up just to collect full pay. I wanted out! I had tried every thing else. Job counseling using the Myers-Briggs and the Campbell Interest Inventory was a pointless expense. I spoke with the Head of a University career center. I did the usual newspaper ad thing (I never got a job this way ever). And, networking only works when the people in the network are employed in your job field (since I am over 30 in the High Tech field that idea sank like a lead balloon since most people I knew were also unemployed).

Basically I kept getting the same patent answer; go back to school! But, no one could come up with the time frame I was to do this (I worked two or more jobs to just keep my head above water AND had a child to raise AND I am a single parent). Nor could they come up with where I was suppose to get the money for this extra burden on my time and finances.

I wanted another approach and I felt that a career coach might be the way to go. Since the article was about people in California, I searched for organizations closer to the Washington, D.C. area. I narrowed it to a choice of four and contacted them all.

When I spoke with Mr. Bill Dueease, I felt as if I had found my long lost brother. Whether or not I am a genuine case of someone with ADD is debatable, but the connection with Mr. Dueease was unquestionable and without a doubt. It was as if he had known me my whole life before I even said a word. He gave me a choice of three excellent coaches for which I was to choose using my gut feeling. Something I am unaccustomed to doing is thinking intuitively.

The day after my first session with the first coach I was physically assaulted by one of the more violent and abusive federal co-workers. This coach knew of this potential and coached me to stand up to this workplace bully the day before. I did some thing I never knew I had the potential to do; I stood up to this violent assault for the first time in my life. I did not do anything stupid, I simply did not cower and run as I had always done before. This produced the most fantastic feeling of accomplishment.

I gave the other two coaches equal time and selected my current coach, Carroll. I could not have made a better choice. The real me was coming to its own when, as I describe it, she let the cap off the well and the riches of who I am came gushing out. Life before Carroll was miserable. I am happy even when I am occasionally working in the original work place where a hostile environment still prevails. I know that I facilitated a transfer to the best job, and that is no exaggeration, The Best Job I have ever had by a factor of 10. I am doing the work I was trained to do in engineering with the best work force I have ever had the privilege to work with. By the way the new job is also with another government agency, it is just a far superiorly managed agency by someone with a "we are a family" attitude.

It does not end there! Carroll has coached me to find and discover my real talent, writing! She is actively coaching me to write my first book. When I mention this to my friends and family, including my eleven year old daughter, they can't understand why I didn't see this before. It seems everyone around me has recognized this capability that I have, EXCEPT ME!

Having for some years been dissatisfied with my career generally, I felt neither able to make a change nor knew toward what I might turn with hopes of not running into the same problem eventually. Coaching made me take a look at myself and how I relate to my business. It gave me accountability as there is a person to whom I must report at the end of 2 weeks. When you're a business owner, you have no one but yourself, or your business partners, and it's easy to procrastinate; but when someone unbiased asks you why something was not accomplished, you really have no good reason. You also feel good when they cheer you for a job well done. One of the key rewards that I've received from coaching is to take even 1 hour per week as personal downtime to relax. I'm quite happy with my TCC coach. It's refreshing to talk to someone who "gets it." I also want to say something to everyone there at Coach Connection who makes the process of matching coaches to clients possible. I've been discussing the process of coaching with people on a discussion list related to a process of inner awareness called "Focusing", which is used in many fields, including psychotherapy, education, social action, bodywork, etc. I've raised the subject of coaching because I believe these two things, coaching and focusing, are deeply compatible and can be used together. People on this discussion list have shared some wonderful experiences as coaches or coaching clients, and shared insights about these experiences.

But a few negative comments were made about coaching experiences which were not entirely satisfying. One fellow said his coach "did most of the talking, filling in all the silences as though they are uncomfortable with my taking time to reflect" and this client had to be very assertive to claim time to reflect and to speak. Another woman said her coach, in the first session, moved right to a list of action steps toward a concrete goal without concern for what has been blocking her all along, let along an exploration of her values and dreams, and where this goal fit in. She said 'I could have figured out the steps myself. If it were that easy, I'd have accomplished this long ago. I wanted help with what's getting in the way." The process of getting to know the client and what gets in their way was skipped right over.

After hearing these stories, I am so full of gratitude for my own coach Ron, and for the way Coach Connection helped my find him.

All three coaches with whom I had an initial session really took time to know ME. The specific goal was not the immediate focus of our first session. I have no doubt that any of these coaches would have provided me with top-quality coaching. And I appreciated being able to have a sample of different coaches from which to make my choice of the best fit.

The best advice I can give is to be honest with yourself and your coach. If a strategy or tool isn't working change it. Even if an idea seems crazy or unrealistic, talk about it.
