The life coaching process is an excellent human improvement process
that works extremely well when conducted under the right conditions.
However, like any other human improvement process it will be much less
effective when conducted outside the designed conditions.
Too many people engage life coaches without meeting all four of the
basic coaching conditions that are necessary for success. Unfortunately,
they frequently achieve less than desirable results. Most people (and
even many coaches) are not aware of the four conditions which life coaching
was designed for. When desirable results are not achieved, the coaching
process is blamed, when in fact coaching was most likely, inappropriately
used. For example, people who want to go snow skiing will not be too
successful doing so in Florida in August, because the snow, the weather
conditions, and the terrain are not right. Snow skiing is still great
but only under the right conditions.
Here are the four key conditions you will want to have met before you
engage a life coach. Meeting these four conditions will virtually assure
you of achieving your goals:
The reason you hire a life coach is to achieve your goals. You need
at least one "coachable goal" for your life coach to assist
you to accomplish. But, what is a "coachable goal?" A "coachable
goal" is a future place you want to go to that requires you to
grow or improve as a person to get there.
Some examples of coachable goals are: attain your ideal income position,
be the leader you want to be, attract the right mate for you, develop
your business to run smoothly and profitably, with less time and stress
on your part. As you can see, they are future places that require you
to improve many aspects of your life to achieve your goals.
.
Your readiness level is a state of mind and an attitude. You have total
control over your degree of readiness. No one can force you, or sell
you, or manipulate you into being ready for coaching. But how do you
know when you are ready? Answering the following four simple questions
will provide you an excellent indicator of your degree of readiness.
I. How committed are you to achieving your coachable goals? Normally
people select coachable goals that are the extremely important to them;
otherwise they would not have sought help. You will reach your goals
much faster and more completely if you are fully committed to achieving
them.
II. How willing are you to accept new perspectives about you?
One of the key powers of coaching is that your coach will provide you
an objective, nonjudgmental, non-critical, non-biased, truth seeking
and supportive view of you. Just like you must look into a mirror to
see what your face looks like, because of the position of your eyes,
you need a mirror to really see your own passions, desires, priorities,
values and talents.
Your life coach will be your personal mirror to provide an objective
view (your reflection) of who you are and what you want, so you become
"The Worlds Leading Expert on You." Seeing your true self
(most likely for the first time) through the perspectives and reflections
of your coach can be an interesting discovery. Your willingness to see
and accept the real you will directly affect your coaching success.
III. How willing are you to invest money on you? YOU ARE the
most important asset you will ever have? Hiring a coach is one of the
greatest ways to invest in YOU. Why? Because you will improve and grow
as a person through coaching. You are more important than your house,
your car, your company, your stocks, or your bonds. As you grow 10%,
20% 50%, everything around you improves 50%, 100%, and 250%.
IV. How willing are you to take action? Coaching is the most
action oriented human improvement process. You and your coach will discover
the action steps that will complete your goals. You will perform almost
(if not) all of the steps yourself. The more willing you are to execute
these steps (one at a time), the quicker you will achieve your coachable
goals.
. Coaching is a very personal process
and not just any coach will do for you. You want to engage a partner
coach whom you personally connect with extremely well. You will want
to have a strong mutual trust and strong mutual respect with your coach
and you want to feel and know that your coach focuses all of his or
her efforts and energies on you and your goals.
The most effective way to discover which coaches will be best for you
is to participate in real coaching sessions with, at least three coaches.
Ideally, you will want the coaching sessions to be free of any sales
activity or interviewing. You want to experience their coaching first
hand to truly feel and understand their coaching capabilities and their
ability to connect with you.
You want
your coach to have years of experience at coaching people just like
you to achieve the same results you are seeking. You also want your
coaches to be excited to coach YOU because they have chosen you as their
ideal clients, before you arrived. This way they have the confidence,
savvy and strong motivation to assist you to reach your goals quicker
and more completely.
Selecting coaches based upon their résumés and titles
will be of little help. In fact, doing so will most likely misdirect
you from much better suited coaches for you. Their experiences at coaching
people to achieve your chosen coachable goals and the successes of their
clients are much more important factors.
By fully meeting all four key conditions before you engage a life coach,
you increase the success rate of achieving your "coachable goals"
from approximately 38% to over 96%.
We welcome your opinions and comments.
